When families send their children to the UK for education, one of the key decisions they face is choosing a suitable guardian. However, the level and nature of support required by a 14 year old boarding school pupil can be quite different from that needed by an almost 18 year old university student.
In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences between boarding school guardianship and university guardianship and how we, Aspire Guardians, support both with tailored care.
Level of Supervision
Boarding School: Pupils are cared for by housemasters and school staff during school term time. Education guardians step in primarily during school exeats, half terms and emergencies.
Under 18 University: Students live independently, often for the first time. Educational guardians fulfill the UKVI visa and under 18 university guardian requirement. Educational Guardians are also available to support University students in the event of an emergency situation such as illness or cancelled flights.
Age and Independence
Boarding Pupils: Usually between 7 and 17 years old and legally classed as minors. Educational guardians have a more active parental role acting en loco parentis and communicate regularly with the school and family.
University Students: under 18, they are expected to be much more independent. Educational guardians are required to provide them guidance and support when necessary but more importantly, to fulfill UKVI visa requirements and university application requirements.
Accommodation and Hosting
Boarding Pupils: Accommodation is provided by the school during term time. Educational guardians need to arrange host family stays during exams and half terms and if a student is unwell and cannot remain on school premises.
University Students: Students usually live in halls or private university accommodation. Hosting is not typically required, but guardians remain available for support in an emergency.
Academic and Pastoral Support
Boarding Pupils: Guardians will attend parents’ evenings, monitor academic progress and support pupils’ well-being.
University Students: Guardians may not be involved academically but can assist with settling in, dealing with any difficulties and offering a safety net for students and their families.
Legal Requirement
Both boarding schools and universities often require international students under the age of 18 to have a UK-based guardian. This is also in line with UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) requirements.
